The Golden Rule was the very first of the environmental and peace vessels to go to sea. In keeping with their Quaker beliefs, the original crew, Bigelow and the others came up with what was then a novel approach: in 1958 they would sail a small craft into the test zone in the Marshall Islands, in an attempt to interpose themselves and the boat between the U.S. Government and its atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons in the Pacific Ocean.
