You Belong Here
This is painted on the wall of our youth room. We are painfully aware of the damage the Christian Church has done to our LGBTQIA friends, and so we are conscious of how the physical space of a Church can be triggering for people who have been hurt. More than anything, we want our space to be safe. We want you to know that you are loved and that you matter. We know that painting something on our wall doesn't magically make this true, we need to make sure we are doing the work. So, we are consistently checking in with one another. What is working? What isn't working? How can we be sure our space is invitational and full of love? We are a group that intentionally wades into the complicated, yet beautiful landscape of spirituality. We want to create sacred space for everyone to show up and be their truest selves. We emphasize community. We prioritize fun, connection, conversation, and contemplation.
What to Expect...
The high school youth group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month and the middle school on the 2nd and 4th. We meet from 6:00pm-8:00pm in the youth room (pictured to the right), which is located in the northeast corner of the meetinghouse. When you arrive you will find pizza to eat, and new friends to talk with! We spend the first thirty or so minutes catching up and talking! After that we often play some kind of game together. No one is ever forced into playing a game, opt in/out as you feel comfortable. After the game we usually have some sort of structured conversation. We often talk about what it means to be a human in the world and how God and spirituality fits into that picture. We cover topics like race, sexuality, gender, and all the varied conversations that pertain to our inward landscape. After we talk we do the examen practice together, which invites us to consider our desolations and consolations for the day while sitting in silence.
Besides our regular gatherings we also meet for fun outings like bowling, laser tag, and rock climbing. In the fall we have a retreat in Yamhill, Oregon that includes doing a high ropes course! Throughout the year we also look for opportunities to serve. We sometimes work the Oregon Food Bank, the Children's Book Bank, and other organizations around town.
